Using Actions in Photoshop Elements

Starting out as an amateur photographer can be daunting, especially to your bank account. Lenses, computer programs, lighting equipment, the costs can add up all to quickly! Instead of feeling like you need to buy the latest and greatest, you can work with what you have to produce quality images. Like I’m sure you have heard before, it’s not in the equipment, it’s in the photographer =). Great equipment will improve your work tremendously, but having the Canon 5D Mark II won’t make you take amazing images!

I am working with Photoshop Elements 8 right now, and I use Adobe Bridge to sort my files. I am going to upgrade to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3, but for now college bills take prevalence over software so I’m working with what I have.

Actions aren’t just for Photoshop! There is a way to install them in PSE, it just takes a little extra effort.

Installing Actions in Photoshop Elements 8 on Mac

To Install Actions in PSE 8 on your Mac, download the action and copy it to the following location on your computer:

  • Mac HD
  • Library
  • Application Support
  • Adobe
  • Photoshop Elements
  • 8.0
  • Photo Creations
  • Photo Effects

Next, navigate to the following location and rename the Mediadatabase.db3 file to MediadatabaseOLD.db3.

  • Mac HD
  • Library
  • Application Support
  • Adobe
  • Photoshop Elements
  • 8.0
  • Locale
  • en_US

Restart PSE and you are set! Everytime you add new actions, simply rename Mediadatase.db3 to Mediadatabase2.db3 Mediadatabase3.db3 and so on. It is best to download a large selection of actions at a time so you don’t have to keep restarting Elements.
